COATS FOR KIDS
On a cold wintery morning, as he drove to WDKX studios, Van White noticed that many of the children had no coats, scarfs, hats, or gloves as they walked to school. Disturbed by what he saw, Van immediately began to discuss the need for our community to ensure that no child go school without a coat.
"I knew when Van came into the studio that something was bothering him" said Tariq Spence host of WDKX's popular morning show known as "The Watercooler". According to Spence, "When Van sees something wrong he won't just talk about the problem on the air... he gets people talking about solutions".
Within weeks of observing those children walking to school without coats, "Coats for Kids" was born. In the years and subsequent winters that have followed Van, WDKX, and the Rochester community have raised thousands of dollars to buy hundreds of children's coats for families who could not otherwise afford to buy them.
The Coats for Kids campaign typically kicks off in the third week in November -- right before the cold months set in. Parents, guardians, and interested persons should contact Coats for Kids staff at (585) 271-6780 for details and deadlines.
OTHER PLACES TO GO FOR ASSISTANCE
Unfortunately, Coats for Kids has a limited supply of coats for area children. Fortuantely, the Rochester area is known as one of the most generous communities in our nation. That means that there are other places where a parent or guardian can go for help should they need a coat, pair of gloves, or boots for their child.
